Until a starter is named, it will remain the central focus surrounding the team.

And so as the days grow closer to kickoff, with no indication that it will happen before then, the questions are only going to continue to increase.

But it at least can be said now who it most likely won’t be.

Alabama coach Nick Saban took the podium Thursday for his final press conference before the Crimson Tide enters its game week schedule next Monday, providing plenty of updates about the team’s ongoing quarterback competition in the process.

Among the new information is that Jake Coker, Alec Morris and Cooper Bateman are currently the top-three players at the position and receiving the majority of the reps. Saban said that will continue until next Saturday’s season opener against Wisconsin, where the team will have at least two quarterbacks ready to play with a third on standby.

“Those are the three guys that got the bulk of the work,” Saban said. “Everybody gets work. Everybody’s working, but those guys got the bulk of the work.”

David Cornwell and true freshman Blake Barnett appear out of the running to start against the Badgers in Arlington, Texas on Sept. 5.

Saban said he has no timetable for when he'll make a decision on a starter.
