Alabama will be kicking off week three as a heavy favorite against Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles shouldn't pose much of a threat to the Crimson Tide (Bama is a 47-point favorite) so this will be a game that will help Saban and company continue to evaluate positions.

The quarterback position seems to be clearing up but both Blake Sims and Jake Coker should see a lot of playing time. Alphonse Taylor and Leon Brown have been battling it out snap after snap at right guard in hopes that one of them will come out the victor prior to the Florida game.

This tune up game will bring some answers for the Crimson Tide, but let's take a look at what our staff thinks about the outcome.

This week has some similarities to last week, although I think it's even more vital that the Tide play well. With Florida looming and Alabama as a prohibitive favorite this week, it would be easy to look past Southern Miss. This team can't afford to do that. They'll beat USM, regardless. But Nick Saban's team needs momentum going into the league opener with the Gators.
The Golden Eagles will play well, and make the score more respectable than most believe, but again, the Tide will roll. Alabama 42, Southern Miss 10

Alabama’s last tune-up before SEC play will be a close game for the first 5 minutes, then the Crimson Tide delivers the knock-out punch within the 1st quarter of play. Alabama needs to continue to show improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Look for Saban to take the foot off the pedal late in the game to provide some quality reps to some of younger players. This is not the Southern Miss from 15 years ago. Alabama looks like the 2nd team in CFB with a convincing win. Alabama 55, Southern Miss 7

A lot of Bama fans have fond memories of this rivalry, but the 1990s ain’t walking through that door! Technically, Southern Miss has won 2 out of 3 since suffering through a 23-game losing streak in 2012-13, but this team has no chance of hanging with Alabama. Think last week’s Florida Atlantic game, but worse. Alabama should pitch another shutout barring a bad turnover or a special teams mistake, and the offense should be able to get a third quarterback some playing time. Alabama 52, Southern Miss 0

Southern Miss was shut out against Mississippi State. That's really all you need to know about this game because Brett Favre isn't walking out of that locker room anymore. I'll talk with you guys next week when the Crimson Tide takes on Will Muschamp and the Florida Gators. Alabama 52, Southern Miss 3

Southern Miss won a game last week.  Other than that they've been terrible for the past 2 years.  I love seeing them on the schedule because it reminds me of those classic 90's Bama teams that played Southern Miss a lot.  But, expect more QB musical chairs, and then expect Blake Sims to be named the starter for Florida. Amari Cooper will get his, but the running backs will be more involved as the coaches will want to get the team used to more standard offense. Alabama 42, Southern Miss 7
