Two weeks into the season and no definitive starter has been named yet at quarterback for Alabama.

Don't expect that to change heading into Week 3.

Alabama coach Nick Saban made it a point to mention in the opening statement of his Monday press conference that the battle for the starting quarterback job remains "no different" than it has been over the past few weeks. He didn't provide any details on how, if at all, the reps will be split this Saturday against Southern Miss.

"I know that you all would’ve loved to create quarterback controversy," Saban said. "I think as you might try to do that, the one thing that I noticed that I wish you noticed, is when Jake Coker threw a touchdown pass, who was the first guy to jump up and give him a congratulations and a hug and all that? It was Blake Sims.

"Both guys are working to improve. We need them both to improve. Both players did good things in the game and both players did things that they could improve on. I think at this point, our focus needs to be on trying to help both of those guys to play better."

Sims started and played all of the first game against West Virginia and started again last week against Florida Atlantic, leading the Crimson Tide to three touchdown-scoring drives on his first three possessions of the game.

Coker played on six of Alabama's 10 possessions against the Owls in relief of Sims, throwing for 202 yards and one touchdown on 15-of-24 passing to Sims' 228 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-14 passing.

When asked about if he was planning on naming a full-time starter by Sept. 20 when the Crimson Tide takes on Florida, Saban didn't divulge into his plans, but hinted that only one may play over the other.

"To me, whichever quarterback develops and gives us the best chance to win when we play Florida, that’s the guy we’re going to play," Saban said. "So far, Blake has done a really good job and we’re trying to get Jake experience. Whether he has to play or we need him to play or something happens to another quarterback, he’s ready to play. We’re making those evaluations on a day-to-day basis. We’re not really ready to make any kind of prediction on what we should do in the Florida game when we’re playing Southern Miss this week."

Injury Report

Wide receiver Christion Jones was the only player to suffer a significant injury during last Saturday's game against Florida Atlantic, but it shouldn't be too long until he's back at full strength again.

"Christion Jones may be a little limited today, but we expect him to be OK by tomorrow, and he’ll just continue with his progression from there," Saban said on Monday.

Jones, a senior, missed most of the second half against FAU after taking a helmet to the ankle during the third quarter. Before he left the game, he made two catches for 52 yards and set up a key block on Amari Cooper's 52-yard touchdown catch, helping him earn one of Alabama's Players of the Week selections.

Wide receiver DeAndrew White (shoulder) and Jarrick Williams (foot) were not mentioned by Saban Monday, but it is expected that neither will play this Saturday against the Golden Eagles.
