NORTHPORT -- Tuscaloosa County fell in heartbreaking fashion against Mountain Brook Friday night.

With no time left on the clock, Spartans junior kicker Mason Dillard connected on a 28-yard field goal to beat the Wildcats, 17-16.

But, for a brief few moments before Dillard's kick won it, Tuscaloosa County believed it had held on for its first win of the season.

One play before his game-winning kick, Dillard and the Spartans needed a 43-yard attempt to sail through the uprights to win it. Dillard's kick fell short, causing the Wildcats sideline to erupt in celebration, but a roughing the kicker penalty allowed Mountain Brook to move 15 yards closer for one untimed down.

"We just have to move on to the next one," Tuscaloosa County coach Lee Gibson told the Tuscaloosa News. "It's a tough break. We had it won and they called a penalty on us."

On the game's previous drive, Frank Garcia's 27-yard field goal gave County High a 16-14 lead with 31.2 seconds left, its first lead of the season.

Mountain Brook (2-4, 1-3 Class 7A, Region 3) took over on its own 26 with 18.5 seconds left on its game-winning drive.

Quarterback Hamp Sisson gave Mountain Brook an early 7-0 lead when he dashed 24 yards into the end zone on the final play of the first quarter. Later, he threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Sims Herron mere seconds away from halftime.

The Wildcats, though, responded quickly on both Spartans touchdowns to make it 14-10 at the half.

Two drives after Mountain Brook's opening score, Wildcats junior quarterback Sam Cooper connected with sophomore running back Bo Evans for a 35-yard touchdown. Then, despite the little time left, Evans rushed 59 yards down to the Mountain Brook 6-yard line to set up the first of Garcia's three field goals with 0.2 seconds left.

Sophomore linebacker Jacquez Jones recovered a Mountain Brook fumble on the Wildcats 30 with 3:10 remaining to end a late Spartans scoring threat and set up Garcia's third field goal of the game.

In the video above, County High play-by-play announcer Mick Gillispie and color commentator Greer Williams provide their postgame thoughts.

The Wildcats (0-6, 0-4 Class 7A, Region 3) travel to three-time defending state champion Hoover (5-1, 3-1) next Friday. The Buccaneers lost 17-0 against Spain Park on Thursday night.
