Twenty-nine years after its last home victory against Alabama on its home field, LSU was just a few short minutes away from finally ending the drought that stretched all the way back to 1969.

Then an even shorter time than the already little amount that remained on the clock, the Crimson Tide added two more years to the drought.

Taking over at its own 38-yard line with 3:16 left and down 16-7, Alabama found the end zone in under a minute when quarterback Andrew Zow connected with running back Shaun Alexander for a 21-yard touchdown pass to make it a one-score game.

Then, it got really interesting.

First, the Crimson Tide elected for an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff and recovered it on the LSU 40-yard line. Then, four plays later, Quincy Jackson caught a 25-yard pass – his second of the game – from Zow to put the Crimson Tide ahead 22-16 with 38 seconds left following the successful two-point try.

Now in the position LSU was in only moments earlier, Alabama just needed to hang on to steal the win. Kicker Mark Wisniewski attempted to squib the kick to keep it away from LSU returner Kevin Faulk but the ball hit the first upman, giving the Tigers great field positon at the Alabama 49 with 35 seconds to go.

But on LSU’s first play of the drive quarterback Herb Tyler was intercepted by Crimson Tide safety Marcus Spencer to end the scoring threat in what finished as a 22-16 victory for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama was outgained 486-369 and had trailed 6-0 at the half. The Crimson Tide improved to 6-3 (3-3 SEC) with the win, while LSU dropped to 4-5 (2-5) on the year.
