Former Alabama fullback Kevin Turner, 46, passed away on Thursday morning after a fight with ALS that lasted nearly six years.

Turner was known as a hard-nosed player during his career at Alabama and eight years in the NFL during the 1990s. He played for the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles and would finish with more than 2,600 career yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Prattville native was originally diagnosed with ALS, also known as 'Lou Gehrig's Disease', in 2010 and fought to raise awareness and research money through the Kevin Turner Foundation during his battle.

His father, Raymond, had this message posted on the front page of the foundation's website:

"Myra and I lost a great son today. He will be missed so much. Thanks to everyone so very much for your support and prayers during this journey. He was ready to go to Heaven, excited he said, Love y'all and God Bless."

Turner told us in 2013 that he had no regrets with playing the game of football and said he'd have no problem with his son, Nolan, playing. Back in January, Clemson head coach and former teammate of Kevin Turner offered Nolan a scholarship to play for the Tigers, which he accepted.

No services have been set at this time, but please check the Kevin Turner Foundation's website for details.
